The Virtualmin control panel uses Virtual servers to add new domains and subdomains to your server. Think of each virtual server as its own separate account with privileges to generally only access items or settings related to that account. Let's take a look at the different types of virtual servers that Virtualmin has to offer. This article implies that you have already installed Virtualmin. If you have not done so yet, please look at the following article: How to install Virtualmin (CentOS 7).
There are three types of virtual servers that Virtualmin utilizes, each with its specific purpose. The different types are outlined below for your convenience.
Virtual Server – A Virtual Server is a primary account in Virtualmin, which normally encompasses a domain/website and all of its related functions such as FTP or email access, all under a specific domain name. Virtual Servers utilize the Virtual Server Owner account for all administrative functions, such as creating additional email addresses, FTP accounts, or adding new websites.
Sub-Server – A Sub-Server is how a secondary domain name or subdomain is set up on a Virtual Server with Virtualmin. This server type typically has its own email addresses, FTP accounts, and domain or subdomain associated with it. It is important to note that a Virtual Server can have as many Sub-Servers as allowed by the server's limitations.
Alias – Can be viewed as a method to make one domain/website exactly like another. This server type allows you to let one domain share the content and email addresses of another domain.
